State of Mind

Where are we?  What are we doing?  What are we thinking?  Me, myself, and I are swimming with the mix of excitement, melancholy, insanity, gratitude, and a plethora of others unnamed today.  Why?  Because I’m alive.  I live.  I breathe.  I make strides and mistakes and stop to smell coffee and flowers.  I run headlong into things and end up with too much and topple the plate too…but at the end of it all, I live.

Recent thoughts are about thinking.  What do I think?  Why do I think what I think, and how did I come to think them?  A grand circle to be sure.  I am also thinking HOW?  How will I get it all done?  I have finished my Storytime Trysts flash pieces and they are edited and ready to go for the 19 th – 21st.  There is a pending commitment for weekly work on ST in January that I haven’t been able to bring myself to think on yet.  I am finishing up The Red Queen, the follow-up to Swingers, and working on Oracle, and the NaNo piece Racing the Rip-tide.  UGH!  I believe I’ve met myself at my pillow too oft of late.

I’m also thinking about gratitude.  Swingers continues to swell and has recently gone from 160,935 in November to Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #29,766 Paid in Kindle Store.  I have no words for the elation.  Gratitude is me.  I hope it is you for whatever it is that makes your day and brightens your smile, your heart, your step.

Did you miss me?

Even though it’s only been a few short weeks, it feels like an eternity since I was here.  NaNoWriMo is verified and I’m hip deep in several other projects.  Racing the Rip-tide was a fun write and really still has so far to go with editing and fleshing it out.  I wrote, but I think I zombie wrote for so much of it makes little sense in places.  I have Flash Fiction for December for Storytime Trysts that I’m working on and ANYONE who wants to take a crack at Flash there are still several spots available.  Check out my facebook page (!/AbyrneMostynWordEnthusiast) for the contact person to get your piece in.  The Red Queen, the sequel to Swingers is bearing down hard on my dreams and interrupting the writing on Oracle which still has so much work to be done.  All in all, NaNo was a bump in the writing process.

Detours seem to abound in my world of late, and characters seem to be vying for the foreground pushing and shoving to get there.  Ite and Margaret had a knock down drag out the other day, it was intense waiting to see which notebook I needed.  I cannot express the mental anguish at changing up mid-stride.  I always thought as an author that you decided, and sat down and wrote a book.  For me, lately anyway, I sit down to write, I might even sit down with a plan, and then somewhere in the implementation phase when I have the pen to page everything changes and I’m the scribe telling the story as someone else whispers it to me.  I am not the master moving the characters through their lives and deciding where they are going.  It is as if they say to me,

“Silly Author…you are the vehicle to get our tale to the masses.  You are not god.  You are the being that can manipulate the pen.  Thrive in your purpose.”

Grudgingly I wait for the words to come and hope I have the right notebook nearby when they spill forth.
Tomorrow is Thursday, and THANKSGIVING…how apropos a day of thankfulness.  I hope everyone has more to be thankful for than they can enumerate.  If you find that you hit a lull however, my gift to you is SWINGERS absolutely free Thursday and Friday for those who want a reason to stay home.  😉

Brightest Blessings.

Blessed Mabon.

Today I burned my manuscript.  I literally took the hard copy, stood in the Autumn rain, chucked it in with the coals and set it to flame.  It was liberating.  Standing there watching the fire catch and the words turn to ash, I was freed.  Freed from the harsh parameters that I set for myself when I began, and freed from the assault, self-inflicted assault as I fought to put the story to words and force it to become the tale I know so well.  Now, I’m not crazy.  I have the notes, the research, and a jump drive copy stashed away.  It isn’t gone.  What it is though, is a blank page to tell the story as it’s telling itself to me.

I have struggled with the telling for weeks, endless weeks, trying to force the tale into the paradigm I created when I took it on.  The feelings of anguish and abuse as I tried to make the story fit words that were not quite right is gone.  The notion of the characters beating me up as they club me about the head to get it right, gone.  I enjoy a bit of domination and bondage as much as the next, but the characters were deigning my demise as I fought to tell the tale with words that were not theirs.  I was not being true to the story, and I felt it with every keystroke.

I am not a great writer.  Yet.  I am however a good writer, in my not so humble opinion, and I think it takes a good writer to step back and look from the outside in at the words and say, “This is not right.  It is not what I set out to do.  I cannot salvage this story telling it this way and have it be the great tale that it is.”  I am a good writer.  I know the story by heart and can tell it as it should be, just not from the place I was.

So, as I sit here on a dreary rainy equinox morn, counting my blessings and embracing the dark half of the year to come I realized that my tale needed something I was not giving it.  With the bounty I have been given, it will take the dark to shine light to what should be.  What could be.  And, what will be everything I dreamed it to become as I put away my ego and let the story be told thru me as the characters tell it, not as I ascribe the better way to be.

Blessed Mabon.

This is the stuff you hope for…  Ten questions to tell the world about what you’re working on, how you see it, and why.  Another great author tagged me on this and to participate I have 10 questions to answer, then tag five more great authors to talk about their work in progress!  LUCKY ME, lucky you, lucky us.  So, here goes my turn, check in with these five amazing authors next week to see what they are up to as well!!  Patricia Terrell, Shelia Lytle, Sarah Lazowski, Annie Maro Slanina, and Lisa Cody.

What is the working title of your book?  Through the Oracle’s Mist
Where did the idea come from for the book?  It started as an original storyline for a character I roleplay for another author.  It grew and developed over time and became the ‘go to’ story on my page.   Each time I returned to it, it took on a new aspect, a new dynamic and the fans seemed to love the developments.  I had people asking for sneak peeks or ask when I would come back to it.  My inbox on Facebook would explode before and after a new post, asking or demanding that I do or not do what they thought was coming next.  I started researching for more involved and developed posts for this storyline and the fans kept asking for more.   The notion of taking it straight from that page to print seemed to be a conflict to me with what I agreed to as a roleplayer, so I sat back and thought if I flipped the point of view and added the pieces that were only vague references along the way that I could make it publishable.   I started working on flipping the story.  It had been mine all along, but now I needed to see it from the other side.  The folks who knew this was happening?  Honestly I wouldn’t call them rabid, but greater support I would argue has seldom been seen.  I had a cover and a fan made video for the tale before I had it half done.  The support has been a whirlwind and I can honestly say my biggest fear is meeting the dreams and expectations of everyone who has been so supportive and excited along the way.
What genre does your book fall under?  Probably paranormal romance, or fantasy romance.

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?  Wow, that is a hard question.  The female lead in my mind has always been Jennifer Garner.  The dynamics and changing roles of the female would require someone who can morph into many personalities and times through history.  The male?  Honestly, because of how the story started, have never been able to see anyone in the role but me.  An actor?  No idea.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?  Learning the price you are willing to pay living forever.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?  Iwould love to have a publisher take this and let it fly, but they would have to love the work as much as I or I would have to seriously consider the self-publication route.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
It was so fragmented, I would estimate two years.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
I see so many influences in the story overall, I don’t know who I would compare to.  I have some amazing authors that I hope to emulate, if I succeeded remains to be seen.

Who or What inspired you to write this book?
Definitely the fans of my roleplay character.  I was working on something else completely and this took the front seat because of them.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
It is fiction, but also non-fiction as it has bits of actual history and factual accounts in it.  I think that makes it interesting and relatable.

Ok Ladies.  Consider yourselves Tagged!!

Because THANK YOU will never be enough..

In the interest of promoting my attitude of gratitude today, I am going to say THANK YOU again to someone amazing.  Before I had written HALF of the rough draft for the book I’m working on I had a fan made video…just because they wanted to.  It is stunning, well done, and so perfect on many many levels.  While I have said THANK YOU many times, I will continue to do so because to me THANK YOU will never be enough for the gift I was given here.

((If you’ve seen the video before, you know what I’m talking about.  It’s okay if you look away this time.))
